Alexander (Sandy) Calder was born in Lawnton, PA in 1898 and died in New York City in 1976. He was the second child of artist parents, his father a sculptor and his mother a painter.
In 1919 Calder earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology. He continued his education at the Art Students League in New York City, where he studied with John Sloan, Guy Pene Du Bois, and Boardman Robinson.
