Alex Katz was born on July 24, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Cooper Union School of Art in New York from 1946-1949, then at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, from 1949-1950.

During the 1960s, he was an art educator, teaching at the New York Studio School, the School of Visual Arts in New Haven, at Yale University, and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn .

Katz is renowned for post-modernist painting of figures and portraits, still-life paintings and printmaking. Katz is considered one of the leading figure painters of the “new realism movement” in contemporary art.
