Bernard Buffet was born in Paris France on July 10 ,1928 and died in 1999. Throughout his early career he largely painted on his own even after entering the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1944. In the mid to late 1940’s he created his own style that can immediately be recognized by its sharp and spikey linear form and its dreary grey and neutral tones. After developing this personal style he won the Prix de la Critique jointly with Bernard Lorjou in 1948. This soon garnered him much attention and he became the most successful painter of his time. Many of his famous works are abstract figural paintings, but he also worked in engraving and printmaking.
